Course overview

This intensive two-year degree offers a unique opportunity to learn about the fashion industry from within the Condé Nast family.

Looking at Fashion Communication as a whole, the course covers Fashion Media, Fashion Branding, Fashion Marketing, Fashion Retailing, as well as Contextual Studies in Fashion and Fashion Styling, Publishing, Fashion Journalism and Image Making.

You will be able to explore all elements of Fashion Communication with the option to specialise in fields such as Retailing, Journalism, Styling and Publishing. Throughout your degree, you’ll hear from industry speakers on a weekly basis and will work both individually and in teams on styling and magazine projects.

Our two-year degree in Fashion Communication is highly intensive and will require you to attend college four days a week. The course is split into eight terms over two years.
The programme’s key aims are to:

  • Introduce you to a broad range of areas within the fashion industry and facilitate your understanding of the key issues surrounding its advancement in the 21st century.
  • Develop your communication skills across a variety of media, with an emphasis on creative outputs and visual messages.
  • Provide opportunities for you to develop key transferable skills such as research and analysis, the ability to think for yourself and to think creatively, and collaboration, organisation and enterprise.
  • Enable you to determine your own personal and professional strengths through critical reflection, with a view to identifying and pursuing a suitable career path within the fashion industry. We run on four 10-week terms, with 12 weeks holiday in total over the academic year.

BA (Hons) Fashion Communication Structure

Our degree programme is intentionally broad in order to allow you to explore a variety of fields within Fashion Communication before deciding on a clear area of focus for the Final Projects over the last two terms of the course. Each year of the course also allows for an elective module enabling you to build up your skills and understanding in a particular area of fashion communication.

During the course, you are also expected to complete an industry placement. While the College provides extensive support in this area, students are expected to find their own placement so that they can develop their job-seeking skills. Careers support is a significant aspect of the College and the programme, and you will continue to be supported after graduation.

Our BA (Hons) Fashion Communication degree programme is validated by the University of Buckingham. The University of Buckingham was named University of the Year for teaching quality by The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide in 2016 and is one of only two private universities in the UK.

Entry requirements

The standard entry requirements for this course are:

  • Three A-levels graded BBB, or an equivalent EU / international qualification
  • GCSE English and Maths at Grade C (4) or above
  • Aged 18 years or older on the first day of the course

The College also accepts equivalent qualifications, such as BTEC and Baccalaureate awards; the preferred International Baccalaureate (IB) score is between 28-32.

Condé Nast College students who have completed a Vogue Fashion Certificate or Foundation Programme can also apply for this course.

Completion of a Diploma in Foundation Studies (Art & Design or Art, Design & Media) also fulfils the entry requirements.

Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL)

Exceptional applicants who do not meet the standard entry requirements may still be considered through APEL if they can demonstrate the skills and capacity necessary for academic study at this level. Sometimes experience is as beneficial as what is learnt in a classroom. The admissions and academic teams will consider applications that show exceptional strengths and alternative evidence, which may include:

  • Work experience
  • Non-accredited courses
  • Extensive reading and research
  • A brilliant, relevant and credible personal statement
  • An exceptionally strong academic or professional reference
  • OR a combination of these

Each application will be considered on its own merit, although we cannot guarantee every applicant an offer.

All applicants for the BA (Hons) Fashion Communication will need to provide an appropriate academic reference. This needs to be submitted with your application.

When choosing a referee, please consider the following points:

  • If possible, your referee should be someone who knows you academically. If you are currently (or were recently) in education, your reference should be from a tutor, teacher, lecturer or head of school/department.
  • If you have not been in education in the past two to three years, please ask an employer, placement or volunteering supervisor, or trainer.
  • Do not ask family, friends or current/past partners to write you a reference – the referee must know you in a professional or educational context.
  • The reference should discuss your suitability for the course and for higher education, and include your work ethic, interaction with other students and whether a future career in the fashion industry is for you.
  • If you are an A-level student and your reference is from a teacher, they should also add your predicted grades.

Portfolio submission

Along with your application, you are also required to submit a portfolio of your visual and/or written work that shows your interest in the fashion industry. If you are applying through UCAS, you will need to send this to us separately at admissions@condenastcollege.ac.uk. If you are not able to create a suitable portfolio, you have the option to complete our College Challenge, an assignment to be completed in written or video format.

Portfolio guidelines

A digital portfolio is preferred in all instances. If you have a traditional Art & Design or Textiles portfolio, please consider the contents carefully and select examples of your work that are most relevant to this particular course. Paper-based work should be scanned and textiles work photographed.

If you have a well-maintained blog, this is considered a suitable portfolio.

During your interview, your portfolio will act as a point of discussion to allow you to demonstrate the following:

  • An understanding of (but most importantly, a genuine interest in) the fashion industry.
  • The ability to communicate visually and the level of your digital visualisation skills.
  • Your ability to research broadly, deeply and relevantly.
  • Your personal tastes and interests.

We are also interested in how well you communicate in writing, and we would like to see suitable examples of written work.

Include work that is relevant to the course content, such as styling and photography, graphic design and branding, journalism, marketing campaigns, websites etc.  Fine Art and Textiles examples are also relevant, but please follow the guidelines above regarding editing these and providing them digitally.

Interview

Applicants who have successfully completed the first stage of the application process will be invited for an interview (either in person, or via Zoom for students unable to attend) by email. The interview typically lasts 20 to 30 minutes and will aim to assess your suitability for the course. It is paramount that you use this opportunity to show imagination, creative thinking and professional ambitions. Above all, you need to show that you can communicate your ideas and thoughts about fashion in three ways – visually, verbally and in writing. The College is looking for students that will actively contribute to the course and take an original approach to their work.

Soon after the interview, we will write to inform you of the status of your application. If you are offered a place, you must confirm (in writing) that you wish to accept our offer. We will then send you the invoice for your tuition fee, and you must pay a non-refundable deposit of £1,200 to secure your place on the course.

Please note that the Condé Nast College of Fashion & Design is not currently eligible for students to receive loans from Student Finance while they are studying here.

The College offers a limited number of means-tested bursaries for this course, which cover the full fee. These are available to lower-income households only. For information on our bursaries, please visit our fees and funding page.

UK/EU students can pay the tuition fee in instalments over the two years of the course.

International students will be asked to pay their first year course fee in full and in advance of arriving at the College.

There is an optional study trip abroad in year one that is not covered by the course fee. This takes place in the spring and further information is provided at the beginning of the course.
