For the launch of our new Vogue Summer School New York, students had the chance to take part in the Vogue Summer School New York’s Fashion Photography Challenge selected by Alessia Glaviano, Head of Global PhotoVogue.

The grand prize for the competition is for Fashion styling student, Jade W. to now have one-on-one mentorship session with Alessia herself. Here, we catch up with Jade on all things Vogue and of course, the inspiration behind her winning photo and what it’s like to attend the Vogue Summer School New York.

Can you tell us a little bit about your winning photo? What was the inspiration behind it?

That photo was taken on a fluke, right across the street from the dorms. My friend Charli just snapped the photo on our way out to explore the city that night.

How would you describe your personal style?

My personal style is everything I think is cool. I think that world building when it comes to your style is very important. My brand Nunyasio has so many influences from pop punk to graffiti and motorcycle wear. My biggest influence is the music I listen to and how those artists dress. Sometimes I’ll pick an outfit just based off how a song makes me feel.

What made you want to enroll in Vogue Summer School?

I just recently graduated, and I don’t have any post-grad plans to go to college. I felt like Vogue Summer School would give me the glimpse of dorm life I feel like I’d be missing out on. I also went for the obvious reason- the opportunity of the school itself.

What does Vogue mean to you?

I love to tell people that Vogue is VOGUE. If all of Vogue’s greatest moments were put into one book, it would be the Bible of fashion.

What are your main takeaways from Vogue Summer School?

Vogue Summer School taught me things that you can only learn hands-on. You can ask a stylist a million questions, and you will always learn more in person, on set, doing the damn thing.

What was the most memorable experience from Vogue Summer School?

My most memorable experience was the final photoshoot at Condé Nast. But I’ll also say the freedom of exploring New York for everything it is, gave me so many amazing memories.

What is your dream job and how do you feel Vogue Summer School has prepared you for your future career?

I started fashion when I was 14 at Oakland School for the Arts, and I always wanted to be a stylist, but that program blossomed me into an amazing designer. My dream job is to never lose sight of the two. Styling is my main focus right now, but I’ll always circle back to design in the end. Vogue Summer School taught me [the] fundamentals of styling [that] I did not get to learn in a traditional fashion design program.

What piece of advice would you offer to incoming Vogue Summer School students?

My biggest piece of advice is to ask a million questions, make good friends (those two weeks will feel long while you’re in it!), and be humble. It’s not a fight for the spotlight. And for any alternative students who are afraid of rejection, just keep being you. You’ll shake the ground you walk on without even trying.
